Youtube brings Tibetans closer.
This is something I have always wanted to write about. What the video websites like the Youtube and Dailymotion have done to our cultural landscape. Besides being a very effective platform to create awareness about Tibet's plight, these websites have helped the Tibetan outside Tibet get closer to the Tibetans inside Tibet.
I am talking here about the music videos by Tibetan artistes from inside Tibet which has inundated these websites. Before the arrival of Youtube, there were video Cds that we could buy in the Tibetan settlements in India, but the Youtube really changed the dynamic. It made it so much easier to watch new and old songs sung by Tibetan singers. Thanks to Youtube we Tibetans living outside Tibet are now very familiar with such talented artiste like Yadong, Kunga, Acha Tsendep (picture above) and Yudrug. Their reach has transcended the territorial Tibet. Now Tibetans all over the world can enjoy their talent and music.

It is ofcourse important here to acknowledge the works of few dedicated fans like Jigdo who post Tibetans songs on Youtube under the same name and Tensing who has a page both in Youtube and www.imeem.com. Thanks to them, we are now able to listen and watch these amazing singers inside Tibet.
What Youtube has done primarily is create familiarity to the sound and music format of songs that comes out of Tibet. Most Tibetans in exile are otherwise more accustomed to the music that has some hint of western and indian rhythm and sound. But Youtube allowed someone like me to become more familiar with the different rythm and style as sung by Tibetans inside Tibet. It therefore has become an important bridge to bring us closer to each other.
