Dalai lama's meeting with President Obama likely to weaken US-China ties.
This was a news piece I read in www.phayul.com the other day. But I thought it was nothing new. In recent times, with the rest of the world feeling helpless in the face of China's growing economy, China has become more vocal and have put pressure on other countries that have expressed interest in supporting the Tibetan leader. And it is obvious that when the Dalai Lama meets the US president in near future, China will condemn the meeting and may even threaten the US of some consequences the bilateral relation (Maybe Beijing will not talk with Washington DC for couple of weeks as a gesture of her displeasure).
However, I think in the case of US, China would still have to be cautious with its criticism and not go far enough to really make the US feel annoyed and threatened. After all, we know both US and China are two nations joined at the hip economically and in trade. Just as much as US has to depend on China for lots of issues, China is equally dependent on the US for its trade and the almost trillion dollar it keeps.
So I am of the view that the coming meeting between the Dalai Lama and the President of the US isn't really going to affect the US-Sino ties as much as others feel. Lets not forget, US is still the Numero Uno country in the world militarily and economically.
